About Saint Katharine Drexel
Katharine Drexel, born Catherine Mary Drexel on November 26, 1858, was a remarkable American Catholic religious sister and educator. She was born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia, and from a young age, she showed a deep compassion for those who were suffering, particularly Black and Indigenous Americans. Inspired by her faith and the teachings of the Church, she recognized the urgent need for education in these communities, which fueled her desire to make a difference in their lives. In 1891, she founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious congregation dedicated to serving the educational needs of Black and Indigenous peoples. Under her leadership, the congregation established numerous schools, including Xavier University in New Orleans, the first historically Black Catholic university in the United States. Her unwavering commitment to education and social justice made her a pioneering figure in advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. Katharine Drexel was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, becoming the second person born in the United States to be declared a saint and the first U.S. citizen to receive this honor. Her feast day, celebrated on March 3, serves as a reminder of her profound legacy and the virtues of charity, humility, and justice that she embodied throughout her life.
